As you may know or not know, skin barrier is an important topic that every cosmetics user should know about as it can have impact on the product you should use, when to use them and how to use them.
The skin barrier is what protects your skin against irritation, damage, skin sensitivity, keep bacteria away, tightness, allow your cosmetics products to work effectively etc. When your skin barrier is damaged, it can mess up the skin and so you would start noticing the above listed and more. Which is why you need to protect your skin barrier every time and what are the things that can cause your skin barrier to be damaged?
1. Actives usage: This happens when actives such as Azelaic acid, AHA, BHA, Retinoids, are introduced at high dosage, or when too many actives are used at the same time,
2. Improper use of cosmetics products: Products are supposed to be introduced gently into the skin such as using once weekly for the first time and then twice a week and keep increasing it to more days of the week, if not, the skin barrier can get damaged
3. Over- exfoliation: The skin go through desquamation which is a natural way of shedding dead skin cells but this could take longer days to happen as you grow older, which is why exfoliating products are used to hasten the removal of dead skin cells. Meanwhile, because of this, people tend to use exfoliating products more often than necessary which may cause the skin barrier to get damaged.
4. Heat: Using hot water to bathe or wash, may contribute to stripping the skin of its protectant which in turn may cause inflammation of the skin, skin redness, drying etc
